How to change folder colors on a Mac

Have you ever wondered how to change the ugly blue folders on your Mac? Here's how!

I have always wished I could change the colors of the folders on my MacBook Pro's desktop but could never figure out how. I have FINALLY figured it out and felt the need to share this hack with everyone! I wish I knew about this years ago...

To change the folder color...

  1. Right click on the folder

  2. Click Get Info

  3. Click on the folder icon in the Get Info panel and copy (Command+C)

  4. Open Preview

  5. When in Preview, go to File and then click New from Clipboard — this will open an image of the blue folder

  6. Go to Markup and click the Adjust Colors icon (looks like a mountain)

  7. Use the sliders (temperature, exposure, highlights, saturation, etc.) to adjust the colors to your liking

  8. When you have the color you want, copy the new colored folder

  9. Go back to the Get Info panel, click on the folder icon in the Get Info panel and paste (Command+V)

To use an icon as a folder image...

  1. Find an icon image with a transparent background

  2. Right click on the image and copy

  3. Go to the Get Info panel of the folder, click on the folder icon in the Get Info panel and paste (Command+V)

To use the same folder color on other folders...

  1. Right click on the folder that has the color you like and go to Get Info

  2. Click on the folder icon in the Get Info panel and copy (Command+C)

  3. Right click on the folder that you want to change the color of and go to Get Info

  4. Click on the folder icon in the Get Info panel and paste (Command+V)

Voila! Now you have pretty folders!
