Do yourself a favor – journal

Putting thoughts on paper puts them in perspective. Documenting memories keeps them alive. Writing how you feel validates your emotions. Personally, I think journaling is a necessary part of growing, remembering and just living. What’s the use of today if we can’t remember it tomorrow, next week or in 10 years?

My love for a good journal started at a young age, but it wasn’t until high school that I really understood the importance of journaling. Journaling has been a constant in my life since my senior year of high school. Since then, I have made it a point to journal at least once a week.

When I have a bad day or a great day, when I can’t fall asleep or have a lot on my mind, my journal is the first place I turn. Journaling is my version of clearing my mind – clearing it through a pen and onto paper.

Looking back, my journals help me remember moments in time that I would have otherwise forgotten – some that seemed so significant at the time, others that changed the trajectory of my life.

I hold these journals close to my heart because some of the most momentous memories of my life live on their pages. I get to relive the butterflies of the first moments with my now-boyfriend, the final day spent in my hometown before moving to college and the excitement of getting my first internship. But I also have to relive the gut-wrenching demise of past relationships and friendships, the sadness I held, and still hold, in my heart over death and illness and the failures I faced over the last four years. These pages allow me to cling to those memories that bring a smile to my face and tears to my eyes.

All of these moments are what have made me, me. My journal serves as a reminder of who I am and why I am.

If you don’t journal, please give it a shot. Write your story. Remember your history. I promise you won’t regret it.
