In the spirit of Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving just a few days away, I started to think about what I'm thankful for.

The list went something like this:

  • Mom

  • Dad

  • Brother

  • Boyfriend

  • Friends

  • God

When listing off the things I cherish, I came to a realization – everything on my list wasn't a what but a who.

I easily could've listed off material things like my Mac, my phone, my apartment, etc. But, in the end, those things have so little significance in my life. I don't look at my computer or my phone and think, "Wow, this has really influenced who I am."

No.

I look at my mom and think about how she has taught me to carry my head high, to always act with kindness and to love as hard as you can.

I look at my dad and remember how he has taught me to be strong in the face of adversity, to work the hardest you can and to never say you "can't."

I look at my brother and reflect on how he turned me into a protective, motherly big sister at the age of 2 and how it feels to never want to stop fighting for those you love.

I look at my boyfriend and see my future in a green-eyed boy who has taught me to believe in myself, has brought me genuine happiness and never lets me forget my worth. He has shown me what it means to love and to be loved gently, compassionately and wholly.

I look at my friends and am filled with pride and inspiration by their strength, determination and independence. Without them, I would laugh less and feel alone more.

You see, there is more to life than what we can buy, what we can do and where we can go.

Life is about who you surround yourself with, who you have by your side for all your big moments and who you choose to let shape you as an individual.

You wouldn't be who you are without who you have.

So, this Thanksgiving season, think about WHO you are grateful for. And thank them.

Thank you to all of those people who have influenced my life and made me who I am and who I will be. I am thankful for you this Thanksgiving season.
